The PICMG 1.0 passive backplane standard moves all of the components normally located on a motherboard to a single plug-in card. A PCI CPU card has two edge connectors on it - one for the PCI bus and one for the ISA bus. The "motherboard" is replaced with a simple "passive backplane" that has only connectors for the bus to plug in to. The PCI/ISA backplane is simple and robust, supporting a high MTBF.
The PICMG 1.3 System Host Board (SHB) specification is the latest in the original PICMG 1.x series that adapts the popular desktop PC format to passive backplane implementations popular in more demanding environments such as industrial automation, military, medical and telecom.
